Hiya everyone!

So I've put together a resume with my past work, school and other experiences that might be relevant to the jobs I'm looking for. But after looking online I'm gotten a bit confused. I want to resume to stand out from the rest but still not be too flashy or childish so the people will just throw it in the shredder without a second glance. How decorative can a resume be without going over the line? As long as you can clearly read the text is it then ok? Any ideas, tips and tricks are very helpful! I've put together a resume that I think shows my style, but some might think childish....so I'm unsure if I should use that one go for a more formal clean one!

Also since all the work I've done at the current company I work for is offbounds I don't really have any design work to show off. I haven't had time to freelance in the advertisement-bit so its hard applying for a ad-design job without any recent stuff to show off, I only got my drawings. Is it wrong to "fake" an advertisement to put in my portfolio just to show my talents eventhough its not for a real company?

If you got any advice, or tips regarging making resumes and portfolios then they would be GREATLY appriciated! I'm still at an eartly stage in drawing and designing but I want to go far so I need to give people a great first impression!

What I was taught at the Art Institute is that you should make it as flashy and cool as you can! Create a little portfolio package that is cohesive. Make sure your style of work and the packaging mesh well together. What will get it thrown in the shredder is if it doesn't stand out from the rest. Now... this advice is for an animator. What kind of career are you trying to get into?

Thanks for the advice. I've been working as an advertisment designer at a local newspaper and was wondering to find a similar job with designing and perhaps some drawing projects. My problem is that I don't have any solid designing education so I'm hoping my skill and what I've learned myself through tutorials and such will give me a boost. Hence why I'm trying to pimp up my resume to show my style and skill.

Since my style is very colourful and cute I think it will atleast stand out from the other professional "stiff" looking resume's :giggle:

Well, honestly, I wouldn't go with your traditional "colorful and cute" style. The industry is run by men, and using that kind of style on a resume and portfolio can appear very unprofessional and can be an instant turn off. The colorful part of your style can stay, but I would try to diversify the subject matter a bit for your portfolio. They aren't looking for "cute" they are looking for "cool" :)

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I think I'll start re-brainstorming a bit. I want to create a logo for myself and my designs/artwork and then create a resume-portfolio-businesscards that are similar but will still work seperately in the future. Something timeless, simple, yet elegant with a spark of my personal flare.
Thanks for your advice, I think I'll start scribbling down ideas ^^
